Fish & Chips and Fast Food, October 2006

Healthy School Dinners!

Takeup of the new healthy school meal regime is down by 41% in some regions. Children say that they simply don't like the food - which disappoints hardworking catering staff, who are making great efforts to present enjoyable and interesting food within the guidelines laid down by the government.

But it's a double edged sword - fish and chip shops local to many schools are finding that business is booming as the disenchanted kids find their way to alternatives to the school canteen. And in Yorkshire, mothers have banded together to deliver fast food from local outlets to children who aren't permitted to leave the school grounds at lunchtime. They claim that many of the children are ordering healthy options such as salad sandwiches and baked potatoes, but fish and chips and burger and chips are the most popular.

Of course, those eating fish and chips as an alternative to a school meal are unknowingly choosing a healthy food - their "rebellion" against what they see as government interference in what they can eat for lunch is a bit of a damp squib!.
